Latest NCS Grants Awarded

The first year of the NCS Conservation Grants prorgamme saw four grants awarded, all under the project and research stream:

  • The Mills Archive Trust was awarded £560 from the NCS Grant Fund to pay book and manuscript conservator Victoria Stevens ACR to carry out an assessment of the conservation needs of the Rex Wailes collection of mill plans and drawings.  This work facilitated an application by the Mills Trust to the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust.  The bid was successful and the Trust was awarded the full sum sought of £9,944.00.
  • The Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh was awarded £421.20 from the NCS Grant Fund to pay textile conservator Emma Telford ACR to carry out an assessment of the conservation needs of a 19th century Chinese textile fragment.  A bid was submitted to the Textile Society for grant for £5,000 to cover the cost of the conservation work required and including a student mentoring opportunity. This was unsuccessful but a bid for £2,700.00 was made to the Wales Federation of Museums and was successful.  A second bid for £3,175.00 has been made to the Army Museum Ogilby fund and the outcome is awaited.
  • The University of Reading was awarded £735 from the NCS Grant Fund to pay book and manuscript conservator Victoria Stevens ACR to carry out an assessment of the conservation needs of a group of various European manuscript fragments, recently acquired for the University's Special Collection via the Art Fund.  A bid was submitted to the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust for £3,527.00.  The bid to NMCT was not successful.
  • The National Museum of Wales was awarded £2,000 from the NCS Grant Fund as the first part of a two-stage award contributing to a research project looking at pollution degradation of heritage materials, focusing on natural history items.

The NCS Grant Fund is made possible by our Business Partners Arcade-UK Ltd and Jamie Briggs Removals Ltd and with a start-up grant from the Dyson Trust.  Details about the Fund can be found here: http://www.ncs.org.uk/ncsgrantfund.php

2020 will be the tenth anniversary of NCS and to mark this, a part of the Fund will be set aside under the funding strand providing free membership support to small institutions.  A further announcement will be made about this development soon.
